While leading as a PowerPack Coordinator and watching the program grow in the Kings School District, teachers and counselors began voicing the need for snacks to provide children during the long day at school. With scheduled snack breaks, many children were unable to supply their snacks, which caused embarrassment and isolation for the students, as well as contributed to the inability to focus in the classroom. Amanda was able to provide support by helping start a snack program. Since its addition, the snack program has grown dramatically and is now utilized by each school in the district.
With the Shelter-in-Place Order in March of this year, Joshua’s Place knew more families than ever could benefit from their food program. The staff at Joshua’s Place worked quickly, alongside the school districts, to develop a unique plan for food collection and distribution to families in need. Throughout the pandemic, food drives were held where Amanda was able to help coordinate groups of volunteers to pack supplemental food for students and families. Families in the Kings School District have two locations for weekly food pick-up—Joshua’s Place in South Lebanon and Columbia Intermediate School. Amanda often handed out food at the Columbia location. Amanda says, she “was humbled by the numbers of families in line to receive weekend food.”
“Throughout this uncertain time, I am grateful to volunteer for an organization…uniquely positioned to be called to action to help so many.”
