In February 2020, Joshua’s Place was eager to announce the addition of the Care Closet program in the Mason City Schools.  This program now provides school counselors in the Kings, Little Miami, Lebanon, and Mason school districts with a strategic method of distributing supplies to students discreetly during the school day. Over the past year, Joshua’s Place provided over $75,000 in daytime nutrition and hydration supplies. In doing so, we have received many testimonials affirming the effectiveness of the Care Closet program in the communities of Warren County. Below is a small testament to lives being affected:
Anke Pietsch
Resource Coordinator Warren County Learning Center
“The food from the care closet helps to eliminate non-academic barriers from learning.”
Debby Henderson
Kings Counseling Department
“Kings High School and Junior High are very thankful for the generosity and partnership with Joshua’s Place. Each month Susan and Amanda arrive with boxes of snacks and smiles on their faces. This past school year has been harder than most on our students; whether finances are tight at home or a snack just feels like some comfort food in a crazy world, our students are grateful. Each month we share our Joshua’s Place donations with English as a Second Language students, credit recovery students, and students in the nurses and counseling offices. We see familiar faces coming in hungry, and it helps to know we have something to offer them. Thank you, Joshua’s Place, for being such thoughtful and generous partners in our Kings Community!”

Keri Perdrix
Kings Mills Elementary Counselor
“Our teachers are so incredibly grateful for the snack program provided by Joshua’s Place. Depending on the grade level, our students can go from 4 hours from breakfast to lunch or from lunch to dismissal. A snack break during that time between meals allows our students to have the nutrition they need to stay focused and learn. This year, we have seen an increasing number of students not bringing a snack from home. Before Joshua’s Place snack program began, our teachers were often purchasing snacks for their students on their own. Now, regardless of whether a student simply forgot or if they genuinely have a financial need in the family that makes purchasing snacks difficult, every child has access to a snack when they need one. We are also grateful that this nutritious snack availability reduces any possible stigma around not having a snack for our children in need. Many thanks to Joshua’s Place for the partnership in caring for all of our students at Kings Mills Elementary!”
Charlie Hartman
Resource Coordinator at Little Miami Schools
“Little Miami Schools really appreciate the partnership with Joshua’s Place and the many ways our residents benefit. The programs like Whiz Kids, Food-Coop, snacks, and CarePortal have benefited us greatly. The snacks are offered to nurses, counselors, and teachers to pass out as needed. I personally hand out over twenty daily.”
Beth Kletzly
Principal of Berry Intermediate School
“We are so very grateful for the Care Closet as this program allows students in need to be discreetly cared for. With the assistance of Care Closet, the financial strain is taken from teachers who so often provide for students on their own.”
Laura Coffey
School Nurse Lebanon High School
“The care closet’s donations for food have meant a great deal to Lebanon High School. Many students do not have enough food at home and often go without breakfast or lunch. With the snacks provided from Joshua’s Place, we are at least able to provide them with some food while they are at school. With our limited supply budget, we used to struggle to afford enough snacks, and now with the donations from Joshua’s Place, we are able to meet the needs of our students. We are very grateful to be a part of this program.”
Molly Schmidt
Mason Resource Coordinator
“The MHS Care Closet and snack program has been a huge blessing for our school. The school counselors, therapists, and mental wellness coordinator identify students who may be in need of easy to prepare meals, weekend snacks, breakfast items, or hygiene products. We then connect these students with the weekly Care Closet and allow students to “shop” from the Closet every Friday or as needed. For example, a student might be meeting with a counselor and mention that they did not eat breakfast and don’t have a lot of food at home. Right then and there, the counselor takes the student to the Care Closet and can get them some granola bars to eat at school, some nutritious meals and snacks to take home for dinner, and any hygiene items that student’s family might need. This not only provides basic needs for our students but also helps build a trusting relationship with that counselor. We have received great feedback and have students excited to stop in on a Friday to grab their items. Our partnership with Joshua’s Place to help provide these snacks and Care Closet items is invaluable!”
Joshua’s Place has partnered with the Little Miami School District to provide CarePortal. This technology platform empowers local churches and organizations to provide material needs in a highly relational context. Joshua’s Place currently has a running list of incredible stories where the community has stepped in to serve others by utilizing the Care Portal program and meet their community needs.
MANY of the stories are never told, but Joshua’s Place is excited to highlight an update we received from our Care Portal Representative, Renae Debow:
“I highlight the things that seem most encouraging or most pressing, but the list lengthens almost daily. I had an incredible, life-giving conversation with one of our front-line heroes, Charlie Hartman. He’s a Resource Coordinator at Little Miami Schools and sees a lot of need first hand. Recently he was working with a mom in need of car repair. A local repair shop took a look, and as is often the case, the repairs were a LOT more extensive than this family originally expected. Here’s where the story gets good! Charlie says, “before I could even put in a CarePortal request for the cost, our friends at Bryson’s Auto Repair took a leap of faith!” They decided to do the repairs and believe that the payment would come in.  In Charlie’s words, “WHO DOES THAT?!” Repairs were done on a Friday, and by Sunday afternoon, a local church had seen the CarePortal Request and paid the bill in full! Near the end of our conversation, Charlie said, “The only word I can use is MIRACULOUS!” I couldn’t agree more!”
CarePortal has proven that when the local church and faith organizations come together to serve families in the community, families are restored, and God is glorified!
There are many ways to serve alongside CarePortal, from delivering items from point A to point B for the ministry to providing groceries and furniture to families in need. Every connection made provides the opportunity for prayer and faith-building.
If your church or organization is interested in partnering with Joshua’s Place and Care Portal, please contact jackie@joshuasplace.cc for more information on available training and implementation in your community!

“Find what you do well and use it to bless others.”

~Mira Schreier

Every talent, skill, and interest can be used to touch the lives of others and bring glory to God. This month’s volunteer spotlight sets this example as she weekly supplies Joshua’s Place with over $100 in products while receiving every dollar back through coupons and rebates. Mira Schreier has been donating items to Joshua’s Place for over a year. Mira uses the stewardship skills she possesses to make a profit on the products supplied to Joshua’s Place so that she can apply the funds to the next round of purchases.

Mira says, “I’ve grown by giving to others. I experience the truth of what Jesus said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ I enjoy giving my time and money to find ways to bless others.” She loves organizing and bagging up all of the donations for drop off knowing that the donated items make a practical difference in the lives of others and provide a message of care.
You cannot measure the impact you have on someone else’s life, even in the simplest forms of service.
